KUCHING: Youth and Sports Ministry plans to build at least three futsal courts for each parliamentary area of constituency nationwide in response to the enthusiastic response from the public to the sport.

The planning, as part of its programme to promote sports and healthy activities especially to the rural communities, has seen a total of 140 futsal courts built throughout the country and thus far, all the facilities have received good public participation.

“Year 2011 would see the ministry increase such facilities considering the high demand and good response of the people. Hopefully when we build more of such facilities, the people will fully utilise it,” said Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek at the ‘meet the people’ programme at SK Paya Mebi, Jalan Landeh near here yesterday.

Also present was Batu Kawah incumbent Tan Joo Phoi and PBB Batu Kawah branch Youth chief Shamsudin Unai among the 200 people in attendance.

He also explained that since football is the number one recreational activities of the people, it was only logical that football related facilities would be built under the programme.

Considering that the cost to build a football field would cost up some RM300,000 to RM400,000 exclusive of maintenance, futsal courts is a cheaper and more effective alternative.

Highlighting that the courts would also multipurpose (for futsal, netball and sepaktakraw, among other things), he hoped that the community especially the women and children would make full use of the facilities as well.

“The next step is to see what other programme and facilities that the ministry could implement for the people,” he continued.

Ahmad Shabery then presented equipment to around 10 various sports club and association in Kampung Paya Mebi.
In another note, he told reporters that his ministry was also looking into adopting the Kuching Integrated Recreational Centre (KIRC) located at the civic centre. Agreeing that the KIRC is a good model, the ministry was interested to implement it on a bigger scale once thorough studies has been conducted.

After the event, Ahmad Shabery was then involved in a friendly futsal competition featuring his team of Batu Kawah PBB branch exco versus Tan’s SUPP N13 Batu Kawah team selection. The match ended with team PBB exco beating SUPP Batu Kawah 3-2
